Ji De Chi (记得吃)

Meet up with a group of friends and head for dessert at 记得吃. My boy order their most popular Durian with Pomelo and sago. I had a nibble of it, it was very nice, the durian paste was smooth and fragrant especially that scoop of durian flesh in it. My friends also order the Mango Pomelo Sago and Mango Sago with Black Pearl. Mango Pomelo don't taste as sweet as the Mango with Black Pearl but both are quite nice too. For me I order the Ice Red Bean with rice ball. The rice ball was very chewy and soft and it was serve in coconut syrup. We also order the Durian Roll and this is like a must for my girlfriend who is a big fan of their Durian Roll. The roll was filled with generous durian flesh so durian lover do order this for a try.

Do expect a lot of crowd especially on weekend and a small reminder not to expect a good services here.

Cheng Mun Chee Kee Pig's Organ Soup King

My favorite place for Pig Organ's Soup and their Vinegar Pig Trotters. They serve really tasty Pig Organ's Soup and the best part is their soup can be refill if you crave for more. Not forgetting their Vinegar Pig Trotters is one of my favorite too but not all people will like this dish as it has a very strong taste and smell of Vinegar. We also order the Salted Fish Meat Patties, it contain a little chestnut inside which make it quite special but than again I find this dish too salty for my liking. Oh... this place opens till 5am daily, so this is something worth checking out for late night supper.

Beach Road Prawn Noodle House

To make a delicious Prawn Noodle the soup must be good and with good succulent prawns. Went to this place to try out their Prawn Noodle as recommended by my colleague.

Their normal Prawn Noodle cost $4.50 if you want it with Pork Rib or other thing price range is from $5.50 onwards which is a little costly. I realize their rice vermicelli is not those fine type but serve in a thicker kind of rice vermicelli which is what I like. Their soup taste good but I find it a bit too oily for my liking. The prawn itself is fresh and the prawn shell can be easily peel off. We also order some fried Ngoh Hiang to go with which is selling beside the Prawn Noodle stall, worth giving a try.

Dumpling Festival, Duan Wu Jie

Today is the Dumpling Festival Duan Wu Jie in chinese. Duan Wu Jie is a widely celebrated festival amongst the Chinese, to pay respect to the patriotic poet, Qu Yuan (pronounced as Chue Yuan). The legend involves a really long and complicated throne-fighting war and political history. But to make a long story short: Qu Yuan was an important minister back in Chu Kingdom in ancient China. He had been known for his loyalty for the emperor of Chu, and loved his country greatly. However, His Majesty had not taken Qu Yuan's advice seriously, and he eventually got himself trapped and captured in a foreign land by his enemies, which then lead to his own death.

Sad and angry at the corrupted, dying Kingdom, Qu Yuan tied himself to a big rock and threw himself into the River of Puo Luo. The people then made rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves and threw them into the river. They believed this would stop the fish from eating Qu Yuan's body. Some would even row down stream in a boat, beating drums and shouting out loud in the hope to scare the fish away (it was believed that it is how the Dragon Boat event is related to the festival.

Since then, the 5th day of the 5th month in the Chinese calendar has been set as Duan Wu Festival to remember the incident. Although there were versions of legends and stories that indicate Duan Wu has existed way before Qu Yuan's death, the tradition still carries on.
The rice dumplings (ZongZi) are glutinous rice (wrapped in bamboo leaves, or other large leaves (lotus is one of the more commonly used leaves). You can find all sorts of different fillings in the rice: pork, roast pork, chestnut, egg, salted egg, mushroom, red bean, or just simply without filling. They could be just white rice dumpling (not pre-fried), or brown (pre-fried with soya sauce).

Last but not least this is also the day whereby my beloved granny will make us some delicious rice dumpling too but sad to say I am not able to have it anymore. This day will also make me remember her and her one and only granny rice dumpling that she use to make for us.

A1 Sin Hai San Seafood Batam - CLOSED, MOVED AND RENAME TO A2 FOODCOURT

Read up quite a lot of good review from this seafood place so we went to tried it when we were at Batam. Taxi driver know this place so there is no worry of getting lost. This place looks like our Newton Circle in Singapore as there is a few different stall selling seafood and BBQ stuff. What amazed me is they have live band singing here so you can also enjoy it while having your dinner. I will prefer to eat here than Delima seafood which is near Waterfront. It is so much cleaner than Delima and the food portion is definitely better and of course the price here is also more worth than Delima.

We choose Sin Hai San seafood and we ordered a Seafood Soup, Oyster Vegetable, Hotplate Deer Meat, Chilli LaLa and Butter Crayfish. We wanted to order Chilli Crab but I guess we had already ordered too much for 2 person so we give it a miss. Food wise is not bad, my favorite dishes is their Butter Crayfish and the juicy tender Deer Meat. Total bill is around $30SG for the above we ordered which is really worth it. After a heavy dinner we decided to walked back to our hotel instead of taking a cab. Do drop by to this place for a try if you happen to visit Batam.

Straits Cafe @ Hotel Rendezvous

One of my best sister had organize a buffet gathering so we went to Straits Cafe to try out their buffet. One minus point is the restaurant feel warm it seems like the air-con temperature was not cooling enough. The buffet spread consists of some Japanese, Western and Local style.

Must try:
Fresh Juicy Oyster
Sashimi
Nonya Laksa (You can add in any ingredients that you like)
Mee Siam
Grilled Prawn
Durian Fudge Cake
Durian Moouse
Durian Puff

Soup Restaurant

I guess I don't need to intro much on this restaurant. Their specialist dish is their Samsui Ginger Chicken, a must to go with their garlic sauce. I personally feel that if this is serve with chicken rice it will taste nicer instead of plain rice. We order a fried tofu and their soup of the day to go along with. Their fried tofu has nothing to shout about, their soup of day is Lotus Soup with Pork Rib. I like the soup it taste sweet and nice but it may not suit everyone taste bud as there is dry cuttlefish added inside the soup so to some it may taste 'fishy and smelly'. Total bill cost about $50 for 2 person which I find is a little costly.

Song Fa Day & Night Bak Kut Teh

Bak Kut Teh, Bak Kut Teh, Bak Kut Teh I simply love Bak Kut Teh :D My colleague drove us to this place for Ba Kut Teh for lunch. There are 2 types of Bak Kut Teh, the clear peppery ones and the black herbal ones. SongFa belongs to the peppery type, for me I will prefer herbal type which my friends say is Malaysia kind of Ba Kut Teh.

They have two kinds of ribs for you to choose from, I will prefer the ribs with less fatty meat. My colleague also order a big plate of Braised Pig Trotter the meat is very tender and not tough. I also order a plate of Braised Pig Intestine but I was disappointed because their Pig Intestine was not soft but taste like rubber to me. We also order Yu Tiao and Salted Vegetable to go with.

Overall this place was good, their soup was not those type that will choke you and their soup is refillable. One funny incident happen when I was there. I am a person who can't finish a bowl of rice so I asked the waitress to add rice so I can share it with one of my colleague. The waitress ask me to take a small bowl of rice instead and when the rice was serve I don't see any big difference between my rice and my colleague one and the funny thing is irregardless big or small bowl the price is only 10cents different.

If you are a Bk Kut Teh lover like me you should come down and give it a try.

Domino's Pizza

My friends has order this for our little gathering, so far I have tried Pizza hut and Californian pizza but not this. Domino's Pizza stated 30min for their delivery services end up this pizza was late for an hour. Delivery of the pizza to my friends place is less than 10min but the driver can get lost for an hour without calling my friend for direction. The kids are starving already and pizza was getting cold when it arrived. Not much comment on this pizza, I only can say pizza will only be nice if is serve hot.

Pizza that was not deliver on time

La Cantina

I had heard from my friends that the ambiance of this restaurant is very beautiful so I decided to choose this place for a special occasion. I made a reservation at 6pm hope to catch the sunset while enjoying our dinner as I had requested to have the seat at their open area.

Is definitely a right choice to come here. The ambiance of the restaurant was really nice the open area was very windy and we manage to watch the sunset while having our dinner, it was beautiful. We order a Hawaiian pizza which only comes in one size, Calamari which was recommended and their famous dish Crab meat Pasta.

Dinner for 2 cost about $90, which isn't too expensive considering the quantity of food we ordered. Sure, the quantity isn't top notch but its still decent Italian fare with huge portions to boot. Throw in the excellent and service is definitely worth a revisit.

Farmland Porridge Steamboat

After buying our groceries at JB we head to Farmland for our dinner. Farmland is futher up from JB the only way to get there is by car and not forgetting GPS to lead the way.

This place wasn't packed even is a weekend. Mostly people bring their family here for dinner. They only comes in either set menu or ala-carte but not buffet style. We choose ala-carte as there is more varieties to choose from. The steamboat was serve in claypot unlike the usual metal pot and it is porridge base so it can be quite filling. The porridge was very smooth and with all the added ingredients to it makes the porridge taste sweeter. Their food is very fresh and there is plenty of choice for you to choose. Total bill was less than $50RM for 2 person but also have to depend on what you order. I will come back again probably will ask some friends to join in too.

Kway Chap

This is usually my favorite breakfast on weekend. They are quite crowded on Sunday and you will expect to wait for more than 20min for your order. They only open in the morning and close around 1 or 2pm.

Sunset Grill & Pub (Seletar)

This place was recommended by one of my friend. It is a nice place to laid back and enjoy the sunset but going to this place might be a little difficult as it is towards the end of the seletar camp. This place are famous for their buffalo wings they have different level of spiciness and their highest level was 30 and if you can manage to conquer this level they will give you a certificate with your name on it. Those who can't take spicy may try up to level 5. They also serve other food but I will say their food prices are a bit steep.

A&W

Anyone miss this? I will always eat A&W when I go Batam or Bangkok just can't help it cause this is already missing in Singapore. I love their curly fries, root beer float, waffle ice cream and their fried chicken it seems better than other places. But I miss their corny hotdog but they don't have it in Batam.
